“Great Beginner Orchid Book” (Orchids For DUMMIES)
As a beginning orchid grower I was a bit intimidated by the whole topic. But after reading Frowine’s book, the topic seems much more approachable. I’ve started with a few moth orchids and they’ve done well, but now I’m inspired to try some oncidiums and paphiopedilums. I really would like to try some fragrant orchids as well.
I like the straight forward cultural information. It’s clear the temperature, humidity, and light levels needed for the various orchids. It gives me a sense of which ones to try and which to wait on. The orchid photos in the center are inspiring, though I’d love to see more!
I also liked the in-depth listing of varieties for the various orchid types. There’s a whole world of orchids out there to grow.
A great book for anyone starting out in orchids growing. Clearly written with the usual “dummies” humor and lightness. A good starting point for orchid growing.

“I LOVE this wonderfully detailed book…” (Miniature Orchids)
This book covers a wide array of miniature orchids – over 300 – with beautiful, detailed illustrations and information – about the flowers, blooom season, planting requirements, etc. I especially like the planting tips – ease of culture, and light and temperature requirements.
I LOVE this wonderfully detailed book on orchid miniatures and have bought several copies to give as gifts to friends!

“I was not disappointed.” (Fragrant Orchids)
I read and enjoyed “Orchids for Dummies” another book by Steven Frowine which actually helped give me the courage to get started in the wonderful hobby of growing orchids, so when I saw the “Fragrant Orchids” book by the same author I picked it up confident that it would help me learn more about these extraordinary plants.
I was not disappointed. After a brief couple of chapters entitled “Fragrant Fact and Fancys” and “The Basics of Growing”, the book is divided into informative chapters on orchid “alliances”, each one profusely illustrated with life like photographs. Everything from pronunciation to recommended potting medium is covered for over 100 fragrant orchids.
I found the extensive appendices offered by the author to be very helpful. Here the species are sorted in to several useful categories that range from “Ease of Use” to “Time of Fragrance”. This book has certainly help deepen my knowledge and love for the beautiful and now fragrant orchids.

“…rate the book at 5 stars.” (Moth Orchids)
This is a well-written and very important addition to the literature about Phalaenopsis orchids. The discussion about hybridization history and trends is excellent, and the book is full of excellent pictures that accurately capture the author’s key points. The organization of the book is also first-rate.
A few minor points that would have improved the book. I would have liked to have seen more detail in the culture section – perhaps the addition of an advanced culture and propagation section would have been appropriate. The index is lacking – it is simply a list of different Phalaenopsis. Including an index with subject-specific topics would have been useful. Finally, although Eric Goo and his Phoenix Orchids are prominently referenced in the text, they were omitted from the index of Sources and Suppliers.
However, in spite of these shortcomings, I still rate the book at 5 stars. Pulling all of this information together into one book and illustrating it as well as is done is invaluable. I will return to this book’s pages over and over again. Phalaenopsis lovers will be thrilled to have this book available to them!

“…this book is the place to start.” (Gardening Basics For DUMMIES)
If you’re looking to start gardening or to update your current knowledge about gardening, this book is the place to start. Steve Frowine makes the gardening information accessible, practical and fun. Like all the …for Dummies books, I particularly like the no-nonsense way he describes some fundamental gardening tasks like planting a tree or creating a flower bed. This book covers all the basics such as vegetable and fruit gardening, herb gardening, flower gardening, landscaping with trees and shrubs, growing bulbs, container gardening and even gardening projects with kids.
But it’s also good for a more experienced gardener. There’s a detailed chapter on building and water gardens and raising fish and some quick, handy gardening projects to do.
